David designs
and makes tailor-made stained glass lights, windows
and screens. From traditional Victorian stained glass
patterns or Tiffany and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired
designs through the art deco picture windows of the
1930’s and on to modern creations. Here he talks
about his work.
After many years of wanting to find out ‘how’
to design and make I attended a 10-week course in stained
glass. During those ten weeks it became very clear to
me that not only could I accomplish the ‘how’
with some skill, but also I got a tremendous amount
of pleasure out of handling the glass and the finished
pieces of work
After making some initial practice pieces I created
a window commissioned by friends in Peacehaven, depicting
a comic cockerel standing on a fence with a rural scene
as the background.
I actually get a physical thrill from the different
glasses that I use and the light that plays from them.
I am always trying to find different ways of using stained
glass to show off its beauty. I am colour-blind, but
find an amazing array of colour in glass, that I find
nowhere else.
