Like many artists in Brighton, I came here to study and stayed.
In my last year at college I was stuck. Jewellery was going great, but ceramics!
The pots I was throwing were emerging – unintentionally - phallic (although I’m sure Freud would have something to say about that) and I wanted to make the most of the facilities before I left: so I decided to make myself a ceramic cow – as you do. However, as is the way with cows, one became two and two became a herd. To my delight they were well received and an ex-tutor whom I really respected told me to keep going with them. So I did and subsequently became known as the ‘cow-woman’ for many years.
With other ex-students I joined a co-operative workshop when I left college. This opened up a whole network of people, support, inspiration and opportunities for me.
I remember hearing about Open Houses because everyone else in the workshop seemed to be doing one.
So why wasn’t I?
Well, I hadn’t been invited.
