I decided to be sneakily proactive
(a trait I now realise I have) and left my postcards at
a few houses, saying how much I liked their shows. It
worked and I was asked to exhibit in the Dragonfly House
(sans dragon fly at the time). That was 1997, I think
and I’ve exhibited every year since in various houses.
I used to exhibit in galleries, exhibitions and fairs
and was very involved in organising a few co-operative
Brighton shows. I loved it for many years although never
relied on it for a living.
I got a buzz from selling the cows and I really valued
talking to the public about my work but it worked best
when I made it for its own sake, not deliberately to seek
a profit. I found that whenever I made a piece thinking
‘this will sell’ it didn’t.
I became less inclined to try to sell through galleries
as this became a bit soulless for me. The cheque was not
enough even when it was enough.
Oh, and I never do commissions – never, never, never. continue back back
