I
make my humble living almost entirely from designing and
making glass pieces at my studio in Hove. Apart from selling
via galleries I undertake commissioned work. This ranges
from interior lighting and furniture through to Corporate
Awards. I also occasionally teach kiln-forming one-to-one
in my studio.
Attaining business stems from word of mouth and my frequent
pursuit of new outlets. The latter may be achieved through
exhibiting at trade fairs and/or sending publicity materials
to individual galleries.
To supplement my ever-fluctuating income I work one day
a week in a gallery. Feedback from potential buyers is
essential to one’s survival in business so it is
important to have this contact with the buying public.
Furthermore, I do some occasional activities-based work
for adults with learning difficulties which I find most
rewarding – a good reality-check for us ivory towered
arty types!
