Our house opened
for the first time in 1998. I was only 4 at the time
so I didn’t understand what was going on so it
didn’t affect me much then. As I got older I moved
into a larger room which we used to display art in.
This meant having to have my bed moved out of my room
every Saturday and Sunday morning, then having to set
up pieces of pottery and other various things.
My dad also made custom animations which used to run
on a computer in my room so that had to be moved in
there as well. I used to sit on a sofa in my room and
watch the same movie repeat itself over and over again.
When I was old enough I started to help bake cakes with
my mum as we sold tea, cakes and coffee for 50p. I started
getting tips for being a waitress.
I like to draw pictures and used to stick them on the
wall and sell them for 50p. This got me a bit of money.
Serving - and eating - cake all morning was fun but
it was really weird having your house turned upside
down like that, plus having my birthday in May made
it much weirder as I sometimes ended up having my birthday
party in June or July. The plus side of this was that
I kind of got two birthdays which was fun.
As we couldn’t have lunch downstairs we went upstairs
to my brother’s room and had a sort of picnic
lunch. After that we normally cleared off and went to
the pier or somewhere like that.
If I could choose to do the open house again I would.
