So, what do I know about art anyway? When I protested
that I’m just a little old lady who doesn’t
know much about art, but knows what she likes, I think
the response was “Pollocks”. Though I suppose
I do hope I know my Monet from my Manet and my Emin
from my elbow.
When visiting galleries, I’m always on the lookout
for the little number I’d like to slip under my
arm and take home. Sisley’s Snow
at Louveciennes from the Musée d’Orsay,
for example. The Turner
study of light over the Venice lagoon, now at Tate
Britain. A wonderful 1923 Kandinsky from MOMA
in New York. Too chocolate-boxy? Let’s see…
Even though I’d hardly slip it under my arm, I
was unexpectedly impressed by the power of Marcus Harvey’s
study of Myra Hindley which formed part of the Saatchi
Sensations exhibition. And, as another example,
I love the humour of Anthony
Caro’s early sculpture, Woman Pulling On A
Girdle, also currently at the Tate.
