I'm
in Beyond the Level , a group formed by several homes
in this area about nine years ago. We had all opened as
independents for about three years before that (only Fiveways
existed then).
This year I have about thirteen artists/makers showing
although I have had up to twenty-five in previous years.
Over the years I've shown all types of artwork - paintings,
sculpture, prints, drawing, ceramics, jewellery, textiles,
metalwork, glass, wood and even photographs. However,
I tend to favour work that I have an understanding of
as I often have to explain it to our visitors and help
to price it. Most of the artists who have shown are women,
many of whom are returning to creating art after having
had children (the creative process seems to go on hold
when the children are tiny).
I do like textile work, probably because my first degree
was in that area. It’s important to get on with
the artists as they do spend quite a bit of time in the
house and that wouldn't be very nice if they were unpleasant
(I'm being diplomatic).
