And what does interest me? Well, textures are a recurring
theme as is the juxtaposition of architecture with other
elements – good architecture reflects its surroundings
and vice-versa, despite the years or centuries between
them. I often think the best architecture reflects human
needs and thus its age is immaterial. Good design will
out.
I don’t have a lot of people in my photographs,
simply because I try to capture the mood of the environment
I’m in and including people can distract from
that because another human will instinctively become
the focus of your attention. I try to make you see the
location the way I did and suggest its impression upon
me. Amsterdam was at once busy yet sparse, unique and
yet full of repetitive architectural elements. For a
place with such narrow streets and so many people, it
was often very quiet, too. I found the Dutch to be very
friendly and laid back (no laughing at the back!) and,
after my initial panic as to whether I’d actually
get any photos of exhibition standard while I was there,
very much liked the city and its people.
In the future, I hope to shoot an exhibition on extremes.
I have the Sahara on my shortlist and possibly Greenland
or the South Pole. The similarities between the landscapes
of those supposed opposites would make for a fantastic
exhibition, so if there are any sponsors out there who
want to send me to the extremes of the world with my
cameras, don’t be bashful, get in touch!
I hope you enjoy the Amsterdam collection and my back
catalogue of photographs that are also available to
view. I’ll be at the Open House every Sunday afternoon
between 2-5pm if you want to come along and ask me any
questions. You are also welcome to email me.
Bill is exhibiting in the home of the Open House Virgin,
Christina Ure. 12 Chester Terrace can be found on this
map.
