In many ways, it’s scary to find my creativity
taking me in directions I didn’t necessarily expect
and sometimes feel I can’t control, but I always
try to trust my intuitions and hope that an instinctive
approach to my art will pay off.
Visually, I love the dynamics of nature. I’m interested
in visual ambiguity. I like unobvious colours produced
by light and mist and water, moody skies and diminishing
landscapes. I find inspiration in the elements be it
Brighton beach, the South Downs or my native Dartmoor.
I like ambiguous skylines and emerging scenery, that’s
why I love to paint Dartmoor on a rainy day. This makes
it often impossible to paint in situ, instead I sometimes
use a camera as my sketchbook.
The more I use my camera, the more I appreciate photography
as an art form. Conversely, the more I use a camera,
the more I see it as being fundamentally different in
its appeal to painting, even if it’s photo-realism.
