AfricArt is
the gallery-in-the-home-and-garden of Renate Braimah,
who celebrates the 10th anniversary of her business
this year. Set up in September 1995, AfricArt held its
first Open House exhibition in December 1995 and has
participated in the Open Houses ever since. ‘The
Brighton Festival Open House Exhibition is still the
highlight of the year for us and 2005 is no exception’,
says Renate. This year’s show features stone and
wood sculptures from Zimbabwe: old favourites and new
work, including wood sculptures by Kervin Moyo and M
Tshuma. As a backdrop to the sculptures from Zimbabwe,
visitors can feast their eyes on colourful paintings,
textiles and metalwork from Nigeria. This exhibition
displays work by some of Africa’s most acclaimed
artists, such as Twins Seven Seven, Jacob Afolabi and
Rufus Ogundele from Nigeria and Joram Mariga, Sylvester
Mubayi and Bernard Matemera from Zimbabwe, to name but
a few.
Around 200 artworks and sculptures are displayed all
over Renate’s split-level house which includes
a stylish gallery (a converted garage) and a large split-level
garden where the sculptures are displayed on four different
levels.
