Brighton-born
textile artist Jehane Boden Spiers has been exhibiting
in Brighton’s Open Houses since 1996. Needing
a new challenge, in 2001 Jehane opened her own canary
yellow Victorian terraced house for the first time,
as part of the Kemp Town Artists group. It quickly became
a must-see on the Open Houses trail, with a very friendly
atmosphere and highly professional display. 2005 will
be the fourth time ‘The Yellow House’ has
been part of the Brighton Festival Open Houses. This
year’s exhibition promises to be another varied
and vibrant exhibition, presenting the work of fifteen
artists, including Jehane’s own textiles, the
work of painters Mark Johnston and Maria Tribe, and
London ceramicists Jane Muir and Delyth Jones.
Jehane lives with her partner Alexander Bruckner and
baby Lukas, born 8th December 2004. Alex is often seen
playing guitar in the garden, although this May he’ll
be on ‘Dad-duty’ as well, so you might have
to put in a special request for some guitar playing!
We try and exhibit the work of different artists every
year, to ensure our visitors have a new experience every
time they visit the house, and it also makes it more
fun for us. We show a variety of artwork from painting,
jewellery, ceramics, glass, and textiles to photography
and furniture. Our personal favourites are painting,
textiles and ceramics, and although we would love to
be able to exhibit large garden sculptures (e.g. the
beautiful large-metal alliums of Ruth Moilliet) and
large-scale furniture, unfortunately our space restricts
us somewhat.
