I came to Brighton four years ago on a complete whim
- a unique opportunity appeared when a very unusual
property came up for sale. The timing coincided with
the redevelopment of my London studio in Cole Street,
SE1, an area I had been based in for seven years. After
a long period of searching for a suitable new studio
in the same area of London it was obvious that the massive
increase in development and rents in the area meant
that I was not destined to stay in SE1. A ‘Leap
of Faith’ had begun and I felt this must be happening
for a reason - so I decided to trust in the universe
and set sail down south after twenty years of working
in London.
It has been a totally new experience for me, one which
is constantly unfolding and a challenging and sometimes
lonely road. When I arrived, I knew only one person
in Brighton. I also had no clients in the area. It's
been tougher than I thought it would be trying to establish
a client base here. My feeling is that the whole industry
has changed and many photographers have to work in a
different way now. Consequently, it's been a huge transition
but has given me the chance to discover myself and look
at new avenues - which I am excited about.
My true identity, I am discovering, lies in the form
of fine art photography - through this journey I am
finding new ways to promote myself and find recognition
as a fine art photographer 'artist'.
Discovering and getting involved with the Artists’
Open House trails in Brighton's May Festival has been
a unique and fascinating experience for me. It has paved
a way to reach the public and bring them closer to my
work and give me more clarity of where I want to go
in the future - and you never know who might walk through
your door and discover you!
