The advantages of opening are that you can exhibit as little or as much of your own work as you desire and be in complete control of how your work is presented. Feeling comfortable in your own home and meeting new people is an upside to Open Housing, as well as being able to decide who you would like to exhibit with.
For exhibiting artists the benefits are selling their work with out a high commission, making it more accessible to the public. It also helps to raise their profile, meet fellow artists - its fun!
Open houses need a friendly open greeting and warm atmosphere along with an exciting variety of works to view. Having a garden with art is definitely an asset especially in good weather, as refreshments can be served. Good parking is helpful as is disabled access, if possible. Also good stewarding is essential from the artists - there’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable or perhaps being followed from room to room.
At my house you can expect a warm friendly greeting, superb art work including sculpture, jewellery, paintings in oil, acrylic and water colour, ceramics, beautiful stitched textiles, a garden full of art and studio to visit. Oh, and of course tea and home made cakes with proceeds going to the Martletts Hospice.
