Where
to begin? How about the end, or at least the present!
Well, presently I am in the preliminary stages of negotiating
with a very large international petroleum company in London
to provide and create works of art for their wonderful
new three-storey office block - the dream commission.
Let’s hope it all works out well. The signs are
good and the feedback positive. The future could be very
bright. But how on earth did I get here? Sometimes I wonder…
It was just three years ago that I was wiling away the
days in my humdrum occupation, working in the Purchasing
department of an engineering company in Horsham, West
Sussex. I doodled and sketched for fun and even created
a cartoon character and storyline for the company’s
monthly magazine but nothing more. Without a focused creative
thought or suggestion to mind, I continued to ignore the
advice and encouragement from friends and colleagues alike
that ‘I really ought to do something with my artistic
and creative talents’ and that ‘I was wasting
myself working here’. Persistently, I held firm
to my belief that, with regard to any artistic talent,
I was simply ‘okay’ - nothing special. After
all, I reasoned, what can you do with A Level Art Grade
D? Though I guess if it’s good enough for Damien
Hirst…
