Artists on the web

With the explosion of internet access over the last few years, it is only natural that the World-wide web is the latest addition to extending the scope of the Open Houses. A number of open house websites have been built over the years, representing individual trails and open houses but it is only recently that two websites have emerged which explore the scope of the internet in greater depth. Both sites aim to promote the wide variety of talent and effort of the artists who open their homes or exhibit in houses during the Brighton Festival.
Yellowhouseart.com, was set up in 2002 by my brother Ruskin Spiers and myself and is Brighton’s first, and as far as we are aware only, Open House art-buying website. The site enables visitors to buy and commission art-work from over forty of our Yellow House artists on-line, all year round. Openhouseonline.co.uk, was set up by local company, Liquid 6 Image Design, at long last giving visitors access to all the different Open House trails on one site, as well as providing articles, news and the much-requested interactive and downloadable maps that visitors have requested since the open houses began!
Our main aim when creating yellowhouseart.com was to create a site which was visually pleasing, could deal with presenting hundreds of pieces of art in an easy and user-friendly manner, would keep the open-house visitors in touch with our artists’ work all year round.
