South Africa Diary
 

The practical reason for visiting South Africa was to see my brother and sister in-law but I was also using the trip as an excuse to expand and diversify my artistic range. The hot, red South African land with its vibrant colours had always seemed to me to be a wonderful contrast to the green hills of England. At a basic level it showed how dramatically different the earth can be without water.
My boyfriend Pete and I set out on the 17th December. The journey there was almost an adventure in itself!
The Buncefield Fire in Hemel Hempstead earlier in the month (see BBC news item ) had caused a fuel shortage on many flights. As a consequence, we had to fly to Milan and refuel there.

Stages of a painting
  To give you an idea of how a painting progresses from start to finish, I've kept a record of a painting I produced from a view from my own flat. Over the coming weeks, you'll see the same technique applied to one of my South African paintings, Lions Head, which will be available to view during the Brighton Festival. continue
