The same is true of a different picture here, that of the penguins at Boulders Beach (for more information, click here). One is so used to seeing penguins in the snow and ice or in captivity at a zoo that it was fun to see these animals in such an alien environment. They are protected here but you can still get very close to them as they are quite friendly.

The painting I made of them was meant to emphasise the contrast between what we see as a ‘cold weather’ bird against the deep blues of the sea and the warmth of the South African sands.
