movie of how the picture came about from start to finish.
The
canvas is stretched over a handmade frame, then painted with
gusso primer paint to prepare the canvas for painting on.
Using diluted colour oil paint and white spirit I paint the
outline of the image. The undercoat paint of the mountain
is painted in to get a feel of depth, tone and shade. The
sky is also added at this stage.
The tones are added in layers
with different colours to build up the mountain range. I
then scratch into the paint to give an abstract effect and
then painstakingly paint all the different coloured dots
in to represent the city lights below. Finally, I darken
the foreground to give depth and a sense of looking down
upon the city lights.
