The Brighton Sculptors
have been exhibiting together at the Church of the Annunciation
for some years and look forward with enthusiasm to see what
each has been up to during the year.
This year we have a former member returning and one new
member. It is not our aim to increase in number, however
we try to keep an exciting balance of sculptors working together.
All members work differently, some carve wood or stone,
others build directly in wire or found materials and cast
from clay or experiment with the casting process. The results
are a varied collection of organic forms, figures and creatures.
The former Vicar, Father David Wolstenholme, was keen to
encourage a sculpture display in the church side-space as
part of the Festival. He, like the rest of us, liked the
idea of linking the Arts, the Church and the Community all
in one celebration. Interestingly one of the Church's former
artistic connections is that Aubrey Beardsley lived and worked
in the Parish and Father Steven Foster, the Parish Priest,
is part of the front house management team at the Tate Modern.
Because of the Tate Modern connection Father Steven has been
invited to preach at All Saints, Hove at the opening service
of this year's festival.
