The Open Houses
didn't really fit into a Fringe, and in 2005 decided to produce
their own brochure. So, now we have three Brighton Festivals
in May: the main Festival – big expensive concerts
and book signings; the Fringe, which revolves around smaller
venues showcasing up-and-coming comedy and theatre; and our
very own Open Houses. There is some token art in the first
two - the main Festival includes the city's art gallery,
the Gardner Centre and Fabrica. The Fringe, too, has a handful
of independent galleries and the odd open house in there
to qualify for an art prize. But by far the biggest festival
in terms of venues (362) and participants (over 1200) is
the Festival of Artists Open Houses. Without the Open Houses,
Brighton Festival couldn't honestly claim to be the biggest
in England!
