My source of creation
is graphic novels. As a child I was always fascinated with
cartoons. I like the way that cartoons are constructed with
the superimposition of layers and different perspectives
and patterns forming action and movement without words.
In more recent animations such as "Sky
Blue" by
Moon Sang Kim you can clearly see that 'multi-mation'
technique in use – the composition of a scene using
a mix of 2D hand drawn animation and 3D miniatures to create
a final image.
In my own work, I explore minute details of comic books
and explode them out of proportion, creating with the resulting
patterns a composition of shapes and forms. I use a technique
of masking the canvas to create a base, adding the abstracted
pattern from the cartoon detail. This forms a new, single
pattern constructed on top of different layers of paint.
