Judy Stevens' house
at 6 Clifton Street, part of Seven Dials trail, is a treasure
trove of fabulous artists, from Worthing-based Gary Goodman
with his paintings 'of resounding directness and intense
human understanding', to award-winning illustrator Jonny
Hannah, showing his bold and colourful paintings, silkscreen
prints and artists books. Glassmaker Peter Leyton, who is
also exhibiting there, has the distinction of once being
at college with David Hockney. (But Brian Grimwood was at
school with David Bowie!)
Sam Toft's claim to fame is that her charming prints of
funny little dogs are a huge hit at Ikea (and have a loyal
following on the internet!). She opened up her studio at
Brown Dog Studios, Chapel Mews, Hove for the first two weeks
of the Festival only, so she could take time off to visit
the other open houses – something the other Open House
participants will know all about! She also took the unusual
step of holding a Virtual Private View on her website at
5pm on 17 April, which sold out after six hours – and
with her Mr Mustard coloured-in originals selling for over £1000
each, no wonder she was handing out free cake when I went
round. Put her in the diary for next year and you may also
get the opportunity to meet His Royal Slobber Chops-ness,
Sir Moses Brown Dog Himself.
