In the case of
plants, and flowers in particular, I aim for the ‘essence’ of
the subject in colour, form and movement. This follows my
exploration of silk painting with its wonderful spontaneity
of brushwork and my admiration of the art of Sumi-e painting
developed to its heights in Japan .
I’ve found this project enormously challenging and
exciting, not to say terrifying and extremely hard work.
When I started attending Seven Dials meetings I began to
realise just how much work was involved in setting things
up. It’s
been a revelation and I’m very impressed by the organisation
and how it all came together – eventually: not to mention
producing the work!
The flat itself has converted nicely into a welcoming little
gallery, where refreshments are available, and has also proved
to be a great way to meet the neighbours, several of whom
have called in already. The venue is just a few minutes walk
from Brighton Station, there are several good pubs close
at hand, the number 7 bus runs nearby ( Upper Gloucester
Road ) and Churchill Square is a short walk away.
