Of course, tea
and cakes are usually served in the garden, where you can
take refreshments while contemplating any sculpture nearby,
but if it's raining... In between showers, I carried on with
my curtailed quest. First was a return visit to John
Dilnot's house at 24 Yardley Street , part of Beyond the Level, to
buy cards and badges. His cards are works of art in their
own right, hand-printed silkscreen prints at £2.50
each - none of your inkjet print-out stuck on card here!
New this year are his garden pests, available in metallic
or fluorescent inks. He's also produced some Mark Pawson
inspired badges, at £3 a set – and the packaging's
too good to open! No cakes, but son Joe was doing a roaring
trade in cold drinks.
Next it was a quick cycle down the Upper Lewes Road to
visit Jackie Jones at number 51, also part
of Beyond the Level. I'd heard she was selling sundials for £2.50
each! As her silver sundials usually go for hundreds of pounds,
I was intrigued. They turned out to be made of cardboard
(well, what did you expect!), but great fun nevertheless,
and guaranteed to tell the correct time, so long as the sun
is out. While I was there I investigated the cakes in the
kitchen and discovered that she also did savouries! I refuelled
on a broccoli and cheese flan (£1.50) and after a quick
visit to Lino Queen Helen Brown's at 99
across the road (mainly to see what the work of an artist
with a name like Z*qhygoem would
look like) was on my way.
